The Guinness Book of Records
The club appeared in The Guinness Book of Records
for selling the most expensive bottle of 60 year old "The Macallan".
The bottle was sold by the Elgin Club for £6000.00 in aid of Polio
Plus. A further £8000.00 was added to Polio Plus by the Club, raised
by its Musical Extravaganza.
David's Story
In conjunction with Grampian Police the Club produced
and distributed 500 videos to schools throughout Grampian and the
North of Scotland. The video tells the moving story of David, a
teenager in our area who tragically died as a result of Drug Abuse.
The Elgin Club received a Significant Achievement Award for this
outstanding Drug Awareness Project.
Another World Record
The Elgin Club served 750 plates of stovies (a
North of Scotland delicacy!) plus 750 drams of "The Macallan" in
17 minutes 22 seconds at the Bothy ballads competition in Elgin Town Hall.
Fastest Round of Golf
In 1991 the club established a Rotary World Record
for the fastest round of golf in 20 mins 40 seconds. Sadly this
record has been well and truly beaten by North Fife in 14 mins 48
seconds. However we will return!!!
First City Centre Marathon Relay
1991 saw the first City Centre Marathon Relay
with 600 competitors participating. The event now known as the Marafun
has now been copied throughout the UK and abroad. The club has now
received several Rotary Citations for this event.
P.R. Awards
During 1993 the Club was presented for the first
time, the national PR award and subsequently went on to win this
coveted trophy on several occasions. The District 1010 PR award was
presented to Elgin 7 years in succession and the Club continues to
receive for its PR activities.
Paul Harris Award
As a result of the successful Golf Exchanges
between Elgin and the Rotary Clubs in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvanian
Rotarians conferred Paul Harris Fellowships on four Elgin Rotarians;
John Grigor, Jim Young, Raymond Wood, Glen Elliot and Jim Young. Other Paul
Harris Awards have been presented by the club to Alistair Russell,
Alex Scott, Sally Wood Lamont, Raymond Wood, Glen Elliot and Jim
Young.
Entertainment 1991 saw the Elgin
Club introduce "Entertainment for the Elderly" in Retirement Homes,
throughout the winter months. Initially eight groups of singers and
musicians volunteered to take part.
The Project proved so successful, that during 1996 Elgin Rotarians,
wives and friends formed a choir, known as "The Rotary Revellers"
providing entertainment in six Retirement Homes from October until
April.
Between 1991 and December 2007 Elgin Rotarians have organised 817
Concerts. |
